Porcelain veneers are a great way to mask many of the imperfections people don’t like about their teeth. Placed over the teeth, veneers are non-invasive option to correcting slight flaws and blemishes. Dr. Pegah Salami provides porcelain veneers as a part of her San Diego dental practice. A graduate of the Boston University School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Salami has focused much of her postgraduate education on cosmetic dentistry.
About half of all Americans are unhappy with their smile. That’s a lot of people who could benefit from porcelain veneers! Sometimes called instant braces for their ability to “magically” straighten teeth, porcelain veneers are thin shells that fit over your existing tooth structure, instantly correcting problems such as discoloration, chips, cracks, and slight misalignments. Thin and translucent, they allow light to pass through, mimicking the look of natural teeth. Only you and your dentist will know you’ve had a cosmetic enhancement.
You’ll need to make an appointment with your dentist to discuss veneers. An art as well as a science, there are several things that your dentist will take into account when designing your veneers including:
It’s also a good idea to bring examples of smiles that you like, such as a magazine photo of your favorite celebrity. Be prepared to discuss the aspects of the smile that you like, this can be a big help to your dentist in creating the veneers that are right for you.
Though there are some minimum preparation veneers on the market, most traditional, porcelain veneers require some tooth preparation before they are placed. By gently buffing your teeth, your dentist will remove a minute amount of enamel, just about 1 to 2mm. This tooth reduction will allow the veneers to lie flat and line up well with your other teeth. Your dentist will take an impression of your mouth which is then sent off to a lab to custom create your veneers. In the meantime, temporary veneers will be placed. You may notice a little sensitivity afterward, but this is perfectly normal.
Once your veneers have been masterfully handcrafted and received from the lab, your dentist might give you a little anesthetic to ensure you’re comfortable. You’ll have the opportunity to see what the veneers look like on your teeth before they are permanently bonded, so be sure that you are absolutely happy with them. If not, tell your dentist what you don’t like. Once they’re on, they’re on, and there will be no turning back! Finally, your new veneers will be bonded to your teeth, and you’ll walk out of your dentist’s office with a brand new smile!
